Coach Mandell began her coaching career at Del Norte High School in the spring of 2022. A DNHS alumni herself, (2012-2016), she competed in the hurdles, sprints, relays and long jump. Upon graduating in 2016, she held school records in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, SMR and Shuttle Hurdle Relays. Her 300 hurdles school record stood from 2013-2025 before she coached the new record holder. Coach Mandell was back to back league champion in all four of her events (4x1, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 4x4) in 2015/2016. She was a CIF medalist in multiple events all four years in high school. Over her 4 years at Del Norte she was awarded Outstanding Freshman (‘13), Outstanding Track Athlete (‘14), MVP (‘15) and Golden Girl (‘15/’16). She was nominated for Del Norte’s Athlete of the year in 2015 and voted All-League Track Athlete of the Year in 2016.

Upon graduating, Coach Mandell went on to The University of California Santa Barbara to study Art and compete on their Division 1 Women’s Track & Field Team, class of 2020. Originally recruited as a Heptathlete, she found her stride as a long hurdler. She left Santa Barbara 7th all time in the Women’s 400 meter hurdles with conference team appearances each year.

During her time at Del Norte, she coached 4 League Champions, 17 CIF medalists, 5 school records and the first ever boy in Del Norte program history to medal at the California State Meet (2023, 300 hurdles, 5th place). Multiple of her previous athletes have continued on to compete at the Division 1 level themselves.

Coach Mandell was brought on as the Head Coach of Rancho Bernardo Track & Field in September of 2025. She credits track for much of what shaped her to who she is today, in large part due to her own High School Coach. She is incredibly grateful to be in the position to help new athletes find the same sense of belonging, opportunities and passion for this sport.

Coach Tom Martin - Pole Vault

Coach Tom Martin is an original Bronco that opened the school in 1990.  He started in the Science department before moving over to the PE department, all while coaching track and field.  He was the school’s first girls head soccer coach, winning a league title in 1992.  He was also RB’s teacher of the year in 2016.

Since retiring from teaching, he has remained passionate about coaching some of the best pole vaulters in the nation.

From the opening of RBHS in 1990, Coach Martin has worked tirelessly to provide our student-athletes with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in athletics and beyond. Coach Martin has coached league champions, CIF champions, state champions, a USATF Junior champion and a NFHS record holder. He has spoken at statewide and national pole vault clinics. Coach Martin not only encourages his athletes to reach beyond any perceived physical limits, but also challenges them to strive to become well-rounded individuals.

Here are just a few of his accomplishments:

  • 2002 AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year

  • 2013 USA Track and Field High School Pole Vault Coach of the Year

Coach Terry Dockery - Distance

Coach Doc began coaching at RB in 1997, coming over after 6 seasons with a very successful Mt. Carmel Program.

Since that time, his cross country teams have won 10 Palomar League and 5 CIF Titles.

Coach Doc has been named CIF Cross Country Coach of the year 3 times.

Combined between Cross Country and Track, his runners have won over 30 individual CIF titles and achieved over 100 All-CIF awards as well as over 150 All-Palomar League honors. This has helped our track team to garner an astounding total of 42 Palomar League and 16 CIF team championships.

Since retiring from work at a running specialty store, Coach Doc spends much of his time frustrated on the golf course and devising fiendish workouts for his runners.

Coach Sprong, a proud Rancho Bernardo High School alumna and former track athlete, began her teaching career in the Social Science department at RB in 2003. The following spring, she returned to the track team to give back to the program that had been so important to her as a student.

Over her first 11 years of coaching, Coach Sprong led her long and triple jumpers to great success, including multiple league championships and top 3 finishes at the CIF Division 1 finals. Five of her athletes qualified for the state meet, with one attending 3 years in a row and two placing in the top 10.

After stepping away to raise her family, Coach Sprong returned to coaching in 2024. In the last two seasons, she has already coached a CIF Section long jump champion who went on to place sixth at the state meet.

Throughout her tenure, Coach Sprong has coached an impressive 21 of the 40 athletes on RB's all-time top ten lists for long and triple jump. Her athletes include the current school record holder for both girls' events. Their success has helped the program win nine Palomar and six CIF girls' track titles, as well as six Palomar and two CIF boys' titles.

While the titles and records are a testament to her coaching, Coach Sprong's greatest pride comes from the relationships she's built with her athletes. She cherishes the connections forged at the jumping pit and continues to be an influential figure in many of her athletes' lives today.

Coach David Freund - Pole Vault

Coach Freund is entering his 20th year of coaching in the 2026 season, starting in 2006. He is a Bronco Track & Field alumni himself, class of 2005, earning a 4th place finish in Division 1 at CIF in the Pole Vault. He went on to compete at Cal State San Marcos where he was a 3-time NAIA Nationals top-10 finalist. He has a personal best vault of 16 feet even.
During his time as a Pole Vault Coach, he has worked with athletes across various schools including the collegiate level at his alma mater, CSUSM. He has coached countless successful vaulters, but a few notable include a 6th place Pole Vault finalist and 2nd place decathlete finalist at the NAIA Collegiate level.

Over his 14 years coaching the high school level he has produced multiple California State Meet qualifiers and Finalists and consistently produces CIF Finalists. During his 7 years at Westview High School he coached 3 athletes to be California State Medalists, the highest being 6th place.
In the 2025 season, Coach Freund took over our RB Pole Vault program and managed to get an athletes to a 7th place finish at state along with several CIF Finalists.

Coach Ian Daum - Sprints

Coach Daum has been coaching high school sports since 2011 and teaching in PUSD since 2017. A PUSD graduate himself, coach Daum ran sprints and relays, and was a walk on at CSU Northridge track. Coach Daum was an assistant coach (sprints and relays) at Del Norte from 2012 to 2019, helping the Nighthawks set multiple school records, win multiple league championships and win three consecutive boys division team titles (2013, 2014, 2015).

In football, Coach Daum has held the titles of assistant coach and coordinator at Del Norte and St. Augustine prior to being here at Rancho Bernardo. He has coached predominantly the offensive line, full backs, tight ends and special teams positions.

Coach Daum has been coaching track (sprints and relays) here at Rancho Bernardo since 2023, helping the girls win a league title and division 1 team runner up with a state qualifying 4x1 team in 2023. And on the boys, three league titles, two division 1 runner ups with a division 1 team title in 2025, as well as multiple league, division 1 and San Diego section individual champions, including the San Diego section champion and state qualifying 4x1 in 2024. Coach Daum is thankful for his loving and supportive wife and excited for this next chapter in Rancho Bernardo track and field.

Coach Kevin began assistant coaching at San Pasqual in the fall of 2022, eventually going back to his roots, and returning to RB as the head cross country coach. Having run under Coach Doc from 2006-2010, the duo were reunited. It’s important to note that Coach Doc would be coaching Kevin on how to head a successful HS sport program vs individually excelling at the 5k and the 1600.

A
Bronco Alumni himself, Kevin competed in cross country and track at RB from 2006-2010, specializing in the mile by his senior year. He always preferred cross country though, as his height benefitted him on hill running. His standout performance was running 16:29 on the famed (old) Mt. Sac course. He would go on to attend Northeastern University in Boston, MA and set the Club teams records in the 1500m and 800m, before trying his hand in a couple of marathons. He ran a 2:54 to qualify for the Boston Marathon, running it in 2013 and 2014. After the pain of those two marathons, he decided short road runs would be better suited for his injury prone self.

Since returning to the sport as a coach, his love and passion has been reignited, and only grown deeper. He considers himself extremely lucky to have coached several school record holders between San Pasqual and Rancho Bernardo within the first 3 years of coaching, two of whom committed to UCSB for the 2025 school year (our head coaches Alma Mater!!). He is thrilled for the successful years to come!

Upon graduation, Lauren went on to compete at The University of California, Irvine where she is ranked 8th all time in the women's triple jump.

After building her career on the East Coast, Lauren is excited to be back in her hometown and to help coach the next generation of athletes at her alma mater.

Coach Madison Nabors - Sprints/Hurdles

Coach Nabors is a first-year marine science and biology teacher here at Rancho Bernardo High School. This will also be her first coaching season here, and she is really excited to be part of the program!

Coach Nabors ran Varsity Track and Field all four years of high school, competing mainly in the 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relay. She was also the sprint captain her junior and senior year, which helped her grow as a leader and learn how to support and motivate her teammates.

After college at UC Santa Cruz, she was a sprint coach for a season at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz. Coach Nabors loved working with athletes on their speed, technique, and confidence, and helping them reach their goals.

Coach Nabors is looking forward to building a positive team environment, helping everyone improve, and having fun this season!

Coach Cole Chinn - High Jump

Coach Cole is excited to be joining the track and field program as assistant high jump coach for the 2026 spring season! A Poway High alum himself (Class of 2022), he competed 4 seasons in high school, spread out across high jump, long jump, triple jump, and hurdles which earned him a podium finish at multiple league finals and a Boys MVP honor in his senior year.

Coach Cole continued training briefly at Mesa College learning the many decathlon disciplines, picking up javelin particularly well before making the decision to prioritize focus on studying and vocal performance and musical theatre in San Diego.

Coach Cole is excited to bring his experiences across different communities to work closely with student athletes in cultivating discipline, community, and passion.

Coach Savannah is a recent graduate from UC Santa Barbara and will be joining us for her first season as a Throws coach!

A Bronco Alumni herself, Coach Savannah competed in Varsity Track and Field all four years for Rancho Bernardo High School. She was a Thrower competing in shot put and discus, and a throws captain her junior and senior year. She says being part of this Track team made her a strong leader and athlete, and set her up for everything she accomplished after leaving RB.

After graduating from RBHS, Coach Savannah went on to attend and compete for UC Santa Barbara, where she was made throws captain in her senior year and completed a BS in Biopsychology. Her time at Santa Barbara taught her countless lessons on time management, technical development, and how to foster a caring and supportive environment without sacrificing healthy competitiveness.

Her favorite part of collegiate track and field was watching her teammates PR and accomplishing things they had been striving for, and having them return the same energy for her successes.

Coach Savannah is excited to return to RB to share her knowledge and hopefully have as lasting an impact as her coaches have had on her. Go Broncos!
